Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite, and is prized in the color of violet-blue purple, which is achieved through heat processing. Discovered in Tanzania in the 1960's, the mines there are now unstable and no longer being used, so the stone is somewhat rare (small amounts found elsewhere).
